Wasn’t Christianity introduced to Japan around the 1500s when they opened up ports to trade with Europe before the Tokugawa Shogunate? I think it has been a part of their culture for a while.

I wonder if it has something to do with the American occupation forces, or if they just think the imagery and stories are cool. Or both

I’m pretty sure that the actual reason for that is that Christian evangelists/missionaries arrived in Japan to “save the heathens” and brought a lot of that imagery (both physically and socially) into Japanese culture but the faith was generally rejected because Japan historically rejects outside influence and the missionaries were basically the invading force of a foreign god.

So apparently Christianity is to the Japanese what manga and anime is to the rest of the world.

Whenever white Christian Americans argue that cultural appropriation doesn’t exist, I start talking about Bayonetta^1 which is absolutely cultural appropriation. Just imagine if 90% of the popular view of Christianity was the “theology” on display in Bayonetta.

^1 I really like Bayonetta, there’s nothing wrong with liking Bayonetta, since Bayonetta is not the majority view of Christianity it’s not harmful appropriation, etc. etc. etc..

I mean

The crusades sucked

But the imagery is god tier and I would fully support a AAA game If you played as a crusader with a metal soundtrack. *cough*

A lot of Westerners find Buddhism and Shinto beliefs to be very interesting and exotic.

It goes both ways, I’m told.

I’d say the number of Catholic churches is understated.

A former friend of mine who was born in Japan, lived in NY but has spent vast amounts of time in Japan, and currently lives there now has told me that there is a fairly strong Catholic presence in Japan, obviously less than Western Nations, but almost as much as The Philippines, but the kicker is that Japan doesn’t consider Catholicism and Christianity to be separate. They don’t really have too many Protestant churches so they just consider Catholic churches “Christian churches”

This friend and I had a discussion on our past upbringings, where I mentioned as a Catholic how I was brought up and taught the faith, and she said that she was brought up the same way, despite her thinking she wasn’t Catholic. I asked her a few yes and no questions to test, chief among them was asking whether she was taught to honor Mary as the blessed virgin. She said yes, and after I asked about an Eastern Orthodox practice that she said no she didn’t practice, I announced to her that she’s actually been Catholic the whole time. She was surprised but could see it.

Point of the story is, the influence of Catholicism and in some degrees Evangelical Christianity probably goes beyond just the art, even if it’s a very “modern” Christian attitude like we see in Western countries today

I mean like there aren’t many Christians in Japan by lack of effort. The Portuguese tried sending missionaries there and that kinda sucked a bit.

Well there was a big Christian population in Japan at one point but they were pretty much exterminated
