White athlete: Cerebral, coach’s son, student of the game, deceptively fast

Black athlete: Possible maturity/discipline issues, this guy is just an *athlete*, classy

Amplify 10x if it’s the NFL

Edit: They also like to ask black guys what they’re going to buy for their moms after they get drafted. I’ve never heard a reporter ask a white guy that.

Similarly, black head coaches are “class acts”, Hispanic coaches are “spark plugs” or “firecrackers”, and white athletes are “gym rats”, etc.

I live in a pretty rural, majority white area, and there was a single black guy on my high schools football team. Nice guy, pretty meh player though.

The coaches never stopped singing his praises, said almost everything on the left part of this graph about him. Definitely not the norm tho, just thought it was kinda weird how they fetishized him.

Oh shit, TRIGGERED. The term “sneaky athletic” absolutely blows my mind, especially within the NFL. And not just because of the racism.

So often it’s used to describe guys like Edelman (when I loved to watch it was Chrebet) who are just shorter wide receivers. But like…they play in the NFL. You can’t play in the NFL, especially at the WR position, and not be athletic. You can’t even sniff the NFL these days in general if you’re not athletic. LONG gone are the days of shit like “The Fridge” or super big fat fullbacks who just blocked.

Offensive linemen in the NFL, who are at or over 300 lbs (at LEAST 280 bs) and can bench press 225 lbs around 20 times (on average, at the combine), typically run about a 5.3 40. That’s a 13 second 100m dash. Sure, that’s nowhere near Usain Bolt, but how fast could your average joe, much less one who’s 300 lbs, do that? Decent high school track athletes run closer to 11 (not the best ones). And a lot of these OL also have pretty awesome vertical leaps.

ALL these dudes are athletic. Edelman is, and always was, athletic. That’s a huge part of WHY he’s in the NFL.

**Describing a white receiver, excluding what you’ve already said:**

“Workhorse”

“Cerebral/High IQ Player”

“A real locker room guy”

“Natural leader”

“Just has that *team first* mentality”

“Impeccable route running”

**Describing a black receiver:**

“Yeah, he’s a very good receiver.”

“Yeah, he’s not a very good receiver.”
