when i was fresh out of college every interesting job wanted 8+ years of experience. It’s 8 years later and now every interesting job barely needs you to have a ged.

My ex FIL went job hunting for the first time at age 59. He had worked for the same company for almost 40 years. It wasn’t a “firm handshake” any longer. He was overqualified for every position. Refused to take a pay cut. He finally found a job after two years of hunting, hates it, works all the time, but he’s getting paid what he wants so…

Why would a 40+ year old be competing for the same job as someone in their 20s in the professional world?

as by comments, “overqualified” is bad, can someone please explain this to some random Highschooler?

From age 22-26 i was told that I don’t have enough experience.

Now you’re telling me a guy in his freaking 40s not 80s is over qualified and having a hard time finding a job? Are you kidding?

I am 45 & have never seen where more knowledge & experience has negatively impacted me getting a job.

Most companies want someone competent, reliable and presentable & they will take someone older if they have them.

If you are going up against a 25 year old then I have found that you will likely get the job over the younger person & if they were to choose the younger person the it may be they are more competent.

If I compared my 25 year old self to my 45 year old self then I would be a complete fucking idiot as a hiring manager to hire my 25 year old self.

Yeah, pretty much. I’m 32 and I’m pushing to get promoted to my first assistant manager position. If I time things right, I can leverage it to get hired at a different company and say that I have managerial experience.

Always always always ask for raises and promotions, never expect them to be handed to you. Otherwise, you get stuck in a job with an employer who knows you’re fine in the position you’re in.

Every company is cheap fucks nowdays they want the cheapest possible people. Yall shit on unions but its the only way to force these companies to pay for quality work.

This mostly affects people that stagnated in a position because they were “just fine” in that position or for whatever other reason.

In tech sales for instance you might have a sales engineer. They’re internally ranked SE 1-5, where SE1 is a person new to that field, SE5 would be an absolute rock star who has a lot of relevant experience and many sales wins, that SE5 would be responsible as a lead on major accounts such as Boeing, Walmart, etc.

So if you’re 40 and still an SE1 or SE2 those are huge red flags. It’s like spending 20 years in the military and still being a private first class or an Army E3 when it goes to E9.

If you’re 40 and an SE4-5 then we absolutely want that person, maybe even a 3 but probably not, an SE 3 should have spent their 30s getting to an advisory level (4).

So yeah, spending 20 years as an SE2 in my opinion means “way over qualified” and I would much prefer a late 20s person in an SE2 position who can be groomed for a decade to be a highly valuable asset as an SE4.

There isn’t ageism here. My lead SE, who is an SE5, is in his mid 60s. If there was such a thing as SE6 he would be that. I’ve argued with him for years not to retire and so far so good!
